Tips and tricks for tamilnadu government laptops[HCL]

In order to prevent selling of these government laptops in market the government has made some identifications like the chief minister’s picture to appear on the laptop front screen, startup, bag, processor and at the top of the cover of the laptop. More over bluetooth, cd driver, web camera and wifi have been disabled. In this articles we are going to see how to get rid of these issues in the latest given government laptops(HCL).


Changing the startup picture in government laptops:

Click the power button on and once the bootloader loads click F2 key to go to the BIOS setup. Now the BIOS screen open. In that click Boot tab at the top of the screen and you will be redirected to a new screen. You could see boot configuration and fast boot disabled.

Click the fast boot and you will be prompted with a fast boot dialog box. click enable option and you will the fast boot option will be enabled.

Once done you can exit the screen. Click ESC key to exit. You will be prompted with a box “save configuration and reset”. Click yes or you can do it in another method. click F10 to save and click ESC key.

Enabling Wifi in government laptops



Frustation occurs to the core when you will have wifi in your college but you many not be able to use it because it is disabled in government laptops. Removing Linux from a Windows 7/Vista machine


Using EmergencyBCD

With EasyBCD (Boot Configuration Data) tool one can add new boot entries (WIndows, Linux or Max) and edit it.  We need to make  Windows as our default boot. So download EasyBCD  from internet and Install it. Link to softpedia (1.54 MB).
  1. Select BCD Deployment
  2. Under MBR configuration, Install Windows 7 bootloader to MBR
  3. Click write MBR

You will see MBR written successfully at the bottom of the window. To verify it, restart your Computer. It should boot Windows without OS selection Screen. You can uninstall EasyBCD once you succeed. Don’t play with this tool unless you are an advanced user, it may make your system unbootable but it can be easily solved.

Delete Linux Partition

Now you can delete Linux partition. Do to that
  1. Type Disk Management in start menu, select Create and Format Hard Disk Partition .
  2. Select the linux partition, in my case it is 93GB. (Choose appropriate one with care. Otherwise you may delete your files or WIndows OS.
  3. Right Click the Partition and Select Delete Volume
  4. To  use this disk space,  right click the same partition (Unallocated) and select New Simple Volume. Click Next till Finish. You can also make multiple volumesDisk Mgmt - Screentshot

Troubleshooting:

If any error occurs. You need Windows OS disc, to fix it easily. Boot from Windows OS disc and select Repair Windows (NO NEED FOR NEW INSTALLATION). It will automatically fix. If it finds your Windows Vista/7 installation, make sure it is UNSELECTED before clicking next. Then click on “Command prompt”. From there, type in the following
bootrec.exe /fixboot

Now close the two windows and click “Restart.” Remove the Windows disk while booting.
